Why choose a concrete pool over other materials?
When it comes to in-ground pools, you really have three main options: concrete (also called gunite or shotcrete), fiberglass, and vinyl liner. Each has its place, but concrete stands out for a few important reasons.
The biggest advantage of a concrete pool is design flexibility. Because the pool is built on site using a steel rebar framework and sprayed concrete, you can shape it however you want. Tanning ledges, vanishing edges, custom steps, attached spas, freeform curves, you name it. Fiberglass pools, on the other hand, come in preset shapes from the factory.
Concrete pools are also the most durable option on the market. With proper care, a concrete pool can easily last 50 years or more, which makes it a real long-term investment in your property. The fact is that most homeowners who go with concrete are thinking decades ahead, not just a few summers.
What does the pool construction process look like?
A lot of homeowners are surprised by how many steps go into building a concrete pool. Here’s a general overview of what to expect in Franklin county:
Design and permitting. Before any digging starts, we’ll sit down with you to talk through your vision, your yard, and your budget. Then we handle the permitting process with the city or your township, which is required for any in-ground pool in central Ohio.
Excavation. Once permits are approved, we dig out the shape of your pool. This usually takes a few days, depending on the size and the soil conditions in your yard.
Steel and plumbing. Next, we install the rebar framework that gives the pool its structural strength, along with the plumbing lines for your filtration, returns, and drains.
Shotcrete or gunite application. This is where the pool really takes shape. We spray a high-strength concrete mix over the rebar to form the shell of the pool. After that, the concrete needs time to cure properly.
Tile, coping, and decking. Once the shell is cured, we install the waterline tile, the coping (the cap around the edge of the pool), and the surrounding concrete decking or pavers.
Plaster or pebble finish. The interior gets finished with plaster, pebble, or quartz, depending on the look you want and like and want to invest.
Fill and start-up. Finally, we fill the pool, balance the water chemistry, and walk you through how to take care of your new pool.
From start to finish, most concrete pool projects take somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks, weather permitting of course.
When is the best time of year for pool construction in Columbus?
Most homeowners want their pool ready by Memorial Day, which is a great goal, but it means you’ll want to start planning well in advance. people here in Columbus know that our winters can be unpredictable, so we generally recommend starting the design and permitting phase in late fall or early winter. That way, excavation can begin as soon as the ground thaws in early spring, and your pool will be ready for swimming season.
That being said, we do build pools year-round when conditions allow. If you’ve missed the spring window, late summer and early fall are also a fine time to start, with the pool ready for the following year.
How much does pool construction cost in Columbus OH?
As you can probably guess, the cost of concrete pool varies quite a bit depending on the size, shape, and features you want. And material as well of course. That said, here are some general ranges to give you a sense:
A basic concrete pool typically starts around $40,000 to $60,000.
Custom pools with vanishing edges, water features, or extensive hardscaping can easily run $80,000 and up.
These ranges include the pool shell, basic decking, and filtration. Add-ons like heaters, automation systems, lighting, and landscaping are separate.
What about pool decking and patios?
One of the nice things about working with a concrete company for your pool is that the decking and surrounding hardscaping are part of what we do every day. Whether you want a stamped concrete patio, traditional broom-finished decking, or paver surrounds, we can design the entire space as one cohesive project. We also offer concrete sealing to keep your new pool deck looking good for years to come.
